Online Football Betting Odds

Calculating Online Football Betting Odds by Mike Jones

The popularity of online sports gambling is on the rise, and if football is your game, knowing how to calculate online football betting odds is the key to a profitable season. Online football betting is all about probabilities. A good bettor learns how to interpret statistics and odds by paying attention to every detail of the football world.

The two most popular ways of expressing football odds are point spreads and money lines. These odds represent the probability of the outcome of the game. They are placed in such a way that balances the number of people that bet on each team, so that the online sportsbook always has profit.

Point spread bets are the most common. They allow the betting field to be leveled between two teams. Proper handicapping provides an even chance of winning or losing the bet, taking into account the spread and an approximately equal number of bettors on both sides of the game. This evens the online football betting odds and makes the game more interesting.

In a point spread bet, the team less likely to win will have points added to their score while the team most likely to win will have points subtracted from their score. These points are the point spread. Point spreads can go up or down at anytime depending on weather and player injuries, or if the bets coming into the sportsbooks are disproportionately favoring one team or the other.

If you bet on the team everyone expects to win, it will have points subtracted from its final score or spread, to even things up. Your team must then win by the point spread given when you placed your bet for you to win. When your team has a greater number of points than the other team after the point spread has been subtracted from the final score, your bet has covered the spread and you win.

With a money line wager, the team you bet on just has to win the game. The money line is made up of two separate odds lines. The one for the favorite is expressed as a negative and the one for the team most likely to lose is expressed as a positive.

While there are many online football odds calculators, you can also develop the skill yourself by collecting and evaluating information on the teams playing. How long team members have played together is one example. Injuries and personal problems of players also factor in. Look for whatever may cause one team to play badly, and then bet on the opposite team.
