Online Gambling BillBy Sean TothWagerWeb.com Contributing Writer OK! Flashback time everybody! Remember when these blowhards that now have a firm grasp on all branches of the U.S. government were running for their (dis)respective offices back in November 2004? They kept on talking about the "evils" of big government? Well, the very same group of Neo-Nazis that brought us The Patriot Act II, Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as the biggest government along with the biggest government deficit in U.S. history and all sorts of other "wild and crazy" policies is now extending its seemingly endless growing branches into your home as well as any place that provides Internet service in this great country and choking our civil liberties once again! The U.S. House of Representatives, led by Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia) and Jim Leach (R-Iowa), is attempting to restrict the use of credit cards to fund Internet gambling accounts on sportsbooks and casino websites with the exception on horse racing and state lotteries (hmmm. ... I wonder why those two industries are exempt?). Once again, the politicians are using morality as a reason for the legislation. Why are these people, our elected representatives, trying to legislate our morality and telling us what we can and can't do online? Although there are many other writers out there telling everybody not to worry because this is unlikely to pass the Senate, I'm saying the fact that this has made it this far is cause for alarm. It didn't just barely pass, either, it passed by an overwhelming majority of the House. Those who don't take things like this seriously just want us to roll over and go back to sleep just like we seem to be doing on many issues these days ... and not just in the U.S. but on a global scale as well. And as anybody who has read my articles in the past knows, we need to take every single act by the ruling elite to control our lives (and again I'm not just talking about the U.S.) very seriously and let them know that we the people outnumber them by the BILLIONS! And that we don't like and will not tolerate such acts. I think what scares the ruling elite here in the U.S. is not that people are gambling online and using their credit cards to do it, but that because it is centralized in a part of the world that they have very little control over. Let's face it, online gambling has created a good, solid life for many people in countries where before similar economic opportunities have been too few and far between in a very long time. After all, if it were actual gambling that the House was against, it would not have made exceptions for horse racing and state lotteries. Another thing about the online gambling industry that I think is very encouraging and that scares many of the ruling elite is the degree of quality self-regulation it has developed over the past five years or so. With so many fair, quality and effective watchdog websites out there such as Majorwager, Covers and The Off-Shore Gaming Association, the industry has, in my opinion, done very well at controlling the fraud and abuse that pops up and in holding those accountable as well as mediating the isolated incidents with the many established gambling websites. So in closing, once again I encourage everybody to call the U.S. Capitol switchboard and let the politicans know that online gambling is here to stay and that instead of wasting time on stopping it, they can find the many benefits of it and finding ways to benefit from it. You can call the Capitol in Washington D.C. at 1-888-355-3588 and let them know that WE THE PEOPLE are responsible enough to know as adults what we can and can not do online! If you don't know who your elected officials are, the operators are very helpful and will connect you to the appropriate offices! PLEASE GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COUNTRY'S POLITICS NO MATTER WHERE YOU'RE FROM WHILE YOU STILL CAN! --- by Sean Toth at WagerWeb.com on July 23, 2006
