Rose Bowl Betting Preview: Bet Penn State vs USCRose Bowl Betting PreviewPenn State (11-1) vs. USC (11-1) Thursday, 5:10 pm Eastern - ABC SBG Global Opening Line: - 10, Total 45 Points could be a valuable commodity in the Rose Bowl on Thursday as #6 Penn State faces #5 USC. The Trojans led the country in defense, allowing only 7.8 points per game while the Nittany Lions were not far behind allowing 12.4 points per game. The offenses of each team also have good numbers as the Trojans averaged 37.5 points per game while Penn State put up 40.2 points per game. "You wouldn't think it would be (a high-scoring game) because of these two defenses," Penn State offensive coordinator Galen Hall said. "We realize they're big, fast, strong, all that. You've got to mix it up. We've got to play our game, which is sort of wide-open. We've got to keep them off-balance. I'm not sure there's anyone as a group that's better than (the USC defense). They really are that good. They justifiably are the No. 1 defense in the nation." SBG Global reports that early College Football betting has the public taking USC at Home. Although both teams have excellent defenses, past trends tell us to expect a lot of scoring in the Rose Bowl. In the last 10 years the Rose Bowl has seen more than 42 points scored nine times. Nine years ago Wisconsin beat Stanford 17-9 and that is the only low scoring game in the bunch. The other totals were 69, 58, 51, 48, 42, 75, 79, 50 and 56. Those point totals look extremely high considering these two defenses. "They're very fast, one of the fastest defenses we've seen," Penn State wide receiver Deon Butler said. "It definitely could be (a low-scoring game) because both defenses are tremendous in their own right. Their offense is probably getting tired of hearing about their defense, like they don't exist." USC's defense is something that hasn't been seen in college football in a long time. They gave up only 56 points in their last nine games. If not for a bad game against Oregon State, the Trojans would be playing for a national title instead of a Rose Bowl title. SBG Global Current Line: USC -8.5, Total 45 Penn State also had one bad game as they lost 24-23 to Iowa. Their defense is not far behind that of USC's. "They're definitely good. They're nothing like we've seen before," said USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, "I know they fly to the ball. They're something special in their own right. They'll be a fun challenge for us." USC is 5-2 under head coach Pete Carroll in bowl games. They are 3-1 under Carroll in the Rose Bowl. Overall, they have a 23-9 record in the College Football betting Rose Bowl. Penn State is 23-10-1 under Joe Paterno in bowl games. They're playing in their third Rose Bowl overall having split the first two. --- by at 1800-sports.com on December 31, 2008
