2006 Pepsi 400 Highlights & Results - Tony Stewart Wins
A slumping Tony Stewart turned it around at the Daytona International Speedway on Saturday July 1st, 2006 in his bright orange No. 20 Chevrolet. The Home Depot team took the checkered flag at the Pepsi 400 after grabbing the lead with 2 laps to go. In the 2005 Pepsi 400, Stewart dominated the entire race only losing the lead for 9 laps. This time he had to earn it the hard way and came close to losing it because of caution flags. The victory put Tony Stewart in fifth place in the
NEXTEL Cup Season Standings.
In true
Tony Stewart fashion, after the win, he climbed the fence and made the mistake of jumping into the crowd were he was greeted by aggressive fans. "There was no way I was going to let those race fans down...I wasn't going to stop. It was every bit as big, if not bigger, than it was last year."
Jeff Gordon was among the contenders all night until he was caught in the final accident. Jeff Gordon was chasing the late Dale Earnhardt's record of 11 plate victories. Instead, Jeff finished in 40th place and dropped to 12th in the
NEXTEL Cup Season Standings.
