PGA Golf - The Players Championship

By Jeff Leyland

The PGA Tour swings into another major, which gives you a major opportunity to make money with some fantastic online golf betting. It's The Players Championship at Sawgrass and the games richest purse at 9 million with the winners share coming in at just under a million.

Phil Mickelson attempts to become the first player ever to win this event in back to back years but will he pull it off? Last year 'Lefty' entered the final round at TPC sitting second, one stroke behind fellow American Sean O'Hair. Mickelson posted a -3 (69) while O'Hair blew up with a +4 (76) and finished 11th.

Even more good news for online betting Mickelson fans: he won't be chased by a Tiger Woods, who is still out recovering from knee surgery. Yes it's true, Mickelson is the odds on favorite at 10/1, but there a number of golfers who have a shot of upsetting him and maybe this year Sean O'Hair 50/1 can reverse his fate and beat Mickelson, but then again maybe not. One thing potentially working against Mickelson this week is his decision to change his putter in recent weeks. He's gone with a slightly longer stick, about an inch and a half to try and relieve some of the stress on his back, but as we all know changing your putter can backfire and create even more havoc costing you a major championship.

Australia's Adam Scott should be hungry for a major win at 12/1. He's had 3 top-10's in 6 starts and a win at TPC in 2004.

Don't look too far past Jim Furyk 16/1 and Vijay Singh 18/1 who always brings it in a major.

Geoff Ogilvy 22/1 has major experience in majors and knows how to scoop one from under 'Lefty's' foot as he did at the US Open at Winged Foot a few years back.

British Open champ Padraig Harrington has come close a few times at TPC and is a two-time runner up at the this event and is 20/1.

Sergio Garcia 35/1 was the runner up last year at TPC, but who knows if and when this guy will ever find is game. Sergio? Hello? Are you there?

Also at 35/1 is last week surprise winner at the Wachovia Championship Anthony Kim. The 22-year old phenom from Los Angeles could continue his hot streak this week.

Don't forget about Freddy. Freddy Couples 85/1 has twice won The Players Championship and was a last minute addition to the field due to an injury. Freddy also shares the course record (63) at TPC Sawgrass with Greg Norman, so Couples might be your feel good pick.

Steve Elkington also a two-time winner at TPC, is a better broadcaster than he is a golfer, but might be a good long shot pick at 100/1.

What about Calc? Long shot to win this week is the man with a million putters, Mark Calcavecchia at 125/1.
