Poker Hand Rankings

Do you know your Poker hands rankings? In just about any game, even in a casino setting, Poker hands rankings are the same. The first thing any aspiring Poker player should do is memorize the Poker hands rankings and what composes the various Poker hands, so they can tell at a glance whether the cards they're holding are good or bad. The universally accepted Poker hand rankings are, in descending order: Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair and High Card.

With the exception of Lowball games, the lowest card in Poker is the two, or deuce; and the highest card is the ace. Poker hand rankings are therefore affected by the rank of the cards in a player's hand: when two players hold the same hand, the one with the higher cards wins. A straight flush consists of five cards of the same suit in sequential order. Any straight flush is a great hand, but the highest and most coveted is the Royal Flush, which is 10-J-Q-K-A of the same suit. Four of a Kind is the next best hand: this is four same-value cards, such as four 8's. Below that in Poker hands rankings is a Full House, which is three same-value cards plus two same-value cards (example: three Queens and two 6's). A regular Flush-five cards of the same suit-beats the low five in Poker hand rankings.

Moving down in Poker hands rankings, the next best hand is a Straight. This is five cards in sequential order, using any combination of suits. Three of a Kind follows, consisting of three same-value cards and any two other cards. Next is Two Pair, which is two same-value cards plus two other same-value cards (two 5's and two K's, for example). One Pair-any two same-value cards-is generally the lowest Poker hand ranking that pays out in a casino setting. Coming in last place in Poker hand rankings is the High Card hand, which is really nothing but determining which player has the highest card in the event no one has a ranked hand.

The few exceptions to Poker hand rankings only occur in certain Poker variations. In a home Poker setting where a Draw game is in play and wild cards are used, it is possible to have Five of a Kind. This hand supersedes even a Royal Flush in Poker hand rankings. Another exception is the Lowball variation, which is Poker where the lowest ranked cards win. In Lowball, the Poker hand ranking is the same, but an A-2-3-4-5 straight flush is the top hand. Whichever Poker game you choose, understanding Poker hand rankings is the key to having fun and winning.
