There are two sets of Pro Football gambling odds. These are the moneyline odds and the spread odds. If a better wants to bet a game straight up without any points given or taken, this bet will be placed on the moneyline. The dog (underdog) team will be a plus bet and the favorite will be a minus bet. A simple example would be +170 vs. -165. This means the dog better puts up $100 to win $170. The better on the chalk puts up $165 to win $100. Neither better gives or takes points.
The spread better has a different set of odds and either gives points or takes points. The dog better takes points and much lower odds than the moneyline better. The chalk better gives points and gets better odds that the moneyline better. Both bets could easily be -110, which mean they both, have to bet $110 to win $100. Points make the difference in determining the winner. The final score difference must be less than the points given for the dog better to win. The chalk team wins by fewer points or loses outright. The difference for the chalk better must be higher than the points given in favor of the favorite.
