Australian Open Semi Finals: Federer vs Roddick

Roger Federer

Australian Open Favorite: Roger Federer

Bringing the Thunder from Down Under by Nila Amerova

Melbourne, Australia - For those of you avid sports bettors that have followed tennis for years you will remember the last time Federer and Roddick met at the Australian Open semis. In some ways reliving that semi-final is awful. Like every good story there are two perspectives and Federer's was every bit as wonderful as Roddick's was awful. Leading up to the 2007 Australian Open, Roddick had bragged that he was closing in on the gap between him and Federer (insert little shiver here) and pundits were all too keen to jump on that bandwagon. Federer answered that boast with authority in a master class performance that saw him crush Roddick 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 in the blink of an eye. He showed at that time why he was the maestro of tennis and answered the question about what Roddick could do against Federer soundly. NOTHING!

In the quarterfinals, Federer dismissed Juan Martin Del Potro (a player that ranks sixth in the world) in a performance wholly reminiscent of his destruction of Roddick. Therefore, as Roddick prepares for his rematch against Federer in the semis, the old debate of what Roddick can do against Federer finds new life and rages on. Only when the match is over will we have our answer, but I have an inkling that I already know the outcome.

Head-to-Head Analysis: Federer leads the series 15-2

Tennis Betting Analysis:

Federer -1000: Waxing lyrical about Federer's achievements is not necessary. We all know he is great and why. So let us focus on this match. After Tomas Berdych took Federer to five sets things did not look too hot in the Federer camp. However, the 13-time Grand Slam champion rebounded in superb fashion, destroying Del Potro in straight sets that saw him drop only three games in the first set. A shell-shocked Del Potro left Rod Laver arena. The crowd was awestruck by the renaissance of Federer of days gone by. Even the typically humble Federer stepped outside of himself to admire his performance on that day.

Roddick +500: Roddick really improved his value in the marketplace when he beat Djokovic in the quarters. True, Djokovic conceded defeat before completing the match but the writing was on the wall. Short-term memory will be important for Roddick. He beat Federer in Miami last year for the first time in 14 tries since 2003.

Tennis Betting Verdict: After Federer's master class performance against Del Potro - one that will surely boost his confidence coming into this match - any doubts about Federer were dispelled. I don't think Roddick will suffer the same awful fate he faced two years ago, ironically, on the very same stage, but I think the result will be the same. A Federer win.
