Week 1 Picks Recap

by Matthew

With Week 1 always so unpredictable, we were on the losing side of the coin. No matter, we have a whole season ahead of us and a lot of winning picks to dole out. A record of 2-3 in the picks corner for Week 1 is not disasterous. As long as we learn from our mistakes it can only get better.

Titans were losers on the money line and with the spread

Tennessee stupidly involved Vince Young in the game. The rookie quarterback threw a costly interception and now could be shell shocked. Kerry Collins was brutal in the first half but picked it up in the second half. In fact, we were in this game when the Titans came back from a 16-0 deficit to tie the game.

Who knew Chad Pennington would have one of the best games of his career? The answer is no one. And don't even try and pretend you knew he would. Pennington was the difference in this one, as the Tennessee defensive line was not as effective as it should have been in pressuring the QB.

Jaguars were winners on the money line and with the spread

It didn't look good early as the Jaguars were down 10-0 with the offense operating with Pop Warner-like precision. But, Jacksonville's defense wore down the opposing side and Byron Leftwich did enough to secure the win.

Yes, Terrell Owens was good in this one, but he was not great. You could see him sucking wind throughout the contest. Clearly the man's conditioning is just not there yet.

Expert NFL football handicapper Mike "The Picker" Jones predicts the Pittsburg Steelers winning Super Bowl XLIII by less than 7 points! Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward have overcome their injuries and are fit to play this Sunday in Super Bowl XLIII. Ben is the leader of the team and even though there are four rookies on the offensive line, they are all very close. Watch out for a close medium-high scoring game, Steelers win 24-20! Bet on the Steelers to win Super Bowl XLIII with a -6 1/2 point spread or -230 money line (a $230 wager pays out $100)!

Seahawks were losers with the spread

Can someone tell me what the heck happened here? A field goal win against the Marinelli-led Lions? Oy. This one does not bode welll for Seattle fans. Shaun Alexander was extremely ineffective, while Hasselbeck just could not get anything going in the air. As inept as the Detroit offense was, their defense did enough to keep them in the game. Give yourself a HUGE pat on the back if you knew the Seahawks would not score one freakin' touchdown in this game. We sure as heck didn't know.

This game tells us to take a very cautious approach to Seattle covering- at least until the offense proves it can produce. Meanwhile, if you bet on the Lions and won some money, don't expect them to hold high-powered offenses to nine points every week. This was more a case of Seattle not playing well rather than the Lions stepping it up.

Week 1 Record 2-3

Overall Record 2-3
