The Redskins' debut effort against the Giants was kind of ugly, from an offensive standpoint. Washington, coming out with the West Coast attack for the first time in a regular season game, could register only 209 yards of total offense, and it still looks like Jason Campbell, who has been through the ringer so many times with so many offensive coordinators, is having a devil of a time adapting to the new scheme. This was also evident as the 'Skins gave anemic efforts toward the end of the pre-season. It could just be that Campbell is not the type who fits snugly into this kind of offense, and in that way it's kind of reminiscent of the Redskins' attempt to put Jeff George into the West Coast offense several years ago.

At any rate, what we have, at least with Campbell at the controls, is an attack that is somewhat dysfunctional against one that is highly functional. Few quarterbacks have their act together quite like Drew Brees, who was 23 of 32 for 343 yards in the opening game against Tampa Bay. Deuce McAllister is practicing again, and the Saints showed what Reggie Bush could do when out in the open field, as he scored on a 42-yard pass reception.

With Campbell throwing for just 4.9 yards an attempt, and producing only 11 first downs against new York, Jim Zorn may at some point turn to Todd Collins to take over the Washington offense, but that isn't about to happen just yet, because Campbell, after all, was a first-round draft choice. We know the Redskins have the capability to run the ball, and New Orleans allowed 7.3 yards a carry to Tampa Bay, but with new additions like Jonathan Vilma and Sedrick Ellis, pounding the rock will be less of a picnic as time progresses.

If we can have the much more efficient quarterback and passing game, and don't have to lay points, we consider it to be a bargain, and that's why we're with the New Orleans Saints in this game that is posted at pick'em in the BetUS football betting odds.
