Sammy Farha

Ihsan "Sammy" Farha, professional poker player, was born in Beirut, Lebanon of a conservative father and a somewhat liberal mother. Sam left his country for the United States as a teenager at the time of Lebanon's civil war. While living in Wichita, Kansas, Sam completed his education with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Kansas.

For a while, Sam Farha worked with his brother in Houston, Texas, but soon began playing poker on the side and winning a few thousand dollars. After working at a few odd jobs in Houston, Sam took his talents to Las Vegas, where the gaming tables offered more money and excitement. Within the next 10 years, his professional poker-playing career took off with a 2nd place win of $1,300,000 against Chris Moneymaker in the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event. Two years later, in a rematch with Moneymaker arranged by poker stars, he again placed in the WSOP tournament, winning more money and another prized gold bracelet.

Sam Farha is reminiscent of the old Vegas-style gambler, as he sits at the table with eyes half closed in a handsome face that never changes expression. The familiar unlit cigarette droops from his mouth, although he is a non-smoker. This is Sam's "lucky" cigarette and his trademark. When he's on a roll, so to speak, his cigarette is "hot enough to light." Being very superstitious, if his luck is running against him, he'll immediately switch to another cigarette. Sam Farha is an unpredictable poker player who has intimidated many of his opponents. In the poker world, he is respected and feared, especially for his aggressive style in pot-limit Omaha. Although he has won big money in major Texas Hold'Em tournaments, it is not Sam's preferred game.

Sam bases his poker success on skill, business, and pure luck. Sam Farha has won over $2,000,000 playing poker, usually high stakes Omaha. Sam Farha, a skilled gamer, won $5,000 at a Pac-Man contest and is also known for his expertise in pool and pinball. At one time, he was featured on a magazine cover in Lebanon for his ability at pinball. Today, Sam Farha resides in Houston, but continues playing in poker tournaments as often as possible. In addition to playing poker, he stays busy writing a book entitled "Luck is Not Enough," working on a reality TV poker series, and developing a video game. Sam Farha also acts as a spokesman for Harrah's Casino in Las Vegas and appears on the TV series High Stakes Poker.
