Sports Wagering Tips

Sports Wagering Tips by Mario Mancini of 1800-Sports

Sports wagering is a skill few can perfect, which is why the bookmaker normally maintains an edge. In order to outperform, you as the sports bettor must have information accessible at your finger tips that is not easily known to the public. Perhaps an important starter at an obscure school has gotten into a brawl and you know via your "local" sources that this individual will not be starting in the next game.

Suppose you don't have access to such information when sports wagering?

You may have wondered what use math and history courses had while in High School. Now you know! History taught us to study the past and learn how past mistakes kept repeating themselves, how powerful empires remained powerful through pivotal elements like leadership (often brute leadership), strength, desire and competitiveness. Geometry and Algebra sometimes seemed like studying a foreign language but since our High School years we've been able to master such formulas and implement them into our handicapping and sports wagering techniques. Statistics, a boring and dreaded course nobody found use for, remains the most pivotal of all mathematics concepts as they related to sports wagering.

Solid handicappers who know their numbers and have time to review historical statistics on teams should always exceed the breakeven point by season's end. Some of the best sports wagering professionals hone in on specific regions and rarely stray from these games. Trying to handicap and ultimately bet every game on the board will almost certainly translate into a losing season.

Some of the more common mistakes when wagering on sports include attempts at trying to predict a winner as opposed to concentrating on which team should lose. Look for flaws in a particular team by studying their local papers then determine how hot their opponent is at the present time.

There is also a simple strategy involved in sports wagering that every bettor should be familiar with and this falls along the same concept of focusing in on a team's weaknesses. Try to bet the dog whenever possible. Review potential weaknesses primarily in favorites. The dog is the team with the handicap, sometimes a significant handicap at that. Excess wins historically occur with home dogs to give an even stronger edge in sports wagering.

Also, as most sports wagering professionals will tell you, focusing in on difficult to manage lines should be of benefit to the bettor. Halftime wagers, quarter bets and exotics will have the bookmakers scrambling within a very limited time frame. There are bound to be mistakes made and we as sports bettors must find those mistakes in equally a short period of time.....though we're under less pressure to do so since it can be assumed we are not running a multi million dollar sports wagering operation.

It is hard enough to find a talented enough bookmaker, let alone locating an expert in props (exotics). Here you are likely to find a fair enough of flaws....most of which are fair game with the exception of an obvious "wrong line" (i.e. a number should be plus instead of minus).

Keep in mind the bookie's top priority is setting a line on nationally televised games. He must then focus on marquee match ups between popular teams that are not nationally televised. Next on the agenda are meaningful match ups that will garner some attention even if neither team is considered "marquee". Of least importance to the bookmaker are match ups that involve "non substance" teams and those belonging to obscure colleges. Gamblers should focus on these teams when sports wagering.

And finally, substantial early line moves must be observed. These are "soft" lines that the sharps (otherwise known as professional sports bettors) have already exploited. You need to incorporate such knowledge into your overall sports wagering scheme. A line starting at -7 that moves to -5 indicates the sharps have hit the dog big and the bookies are trying to get balanced action on the favorite.
