Super Bowl History

Super Bowl history began in 1967 when the American Football League (AFL) played against the National Football League (NFL) for the world championship. The two leagues merged in 1970 and the Super Bowl became the NFL's championship game. Super Bowl history traces the name itself to a suggestion made by Lamar Hunt, based on his daughter's super ball toy and the fact that college football games were held in various bowl-shaped stadiums. Although football fans and the press began to use the shorter term, it was not until 1969, that the official name, Super Bowl, replaced the original title of the "AFL-NFL World Championship Game" in Super Bowl history.

The first two Super Bowls were won by the Green Bay Packers of the NFL, which caused some concern among the owners of the AFL teams. However, the New York Jets won the third game by defeating the Baltimore Colts of the NFL, a huge upset in Super Bowl history. Again, in the 4th Super Bowl, the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings, the last championship game before the merger of the two leagues. Three NFL teams joined the AFL teams for a total of 13, forming the American Football Conference (AFC), and the remaining 13 teams became the National Football Conference (NFC). Since that time, the Super Bowl game has been played between the champions of the AFC and the NFC. The winning team receives the Vince Lombardi trophy, named after the coach of the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL decides the location of the Super Bowl three to five years in advance, after a number of cities compete to host the game. Preference usually goes to cities in the southern regions of the United States or to cities with domed stadiums, with over half the Super Bowls played in New Orleans, Miami, and Los Angeles. The leading winners of the Super Bowl include the Dallas Cowboys, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the San Francisco 49'ers, the Oakland Raiders, the Washington Redskins, and the New England Patriots.
