NCAA Basketball Betting Madness Preview - Midwest Bracket

By Tim Furious

The Midwest bracket has been an absolute mess for the sports betting community because of the multitude of upsets. The battle of Beasley and O.J. Mayo was handedly won by the underdog Kansas State Wildcats when they beat down USC and their celebrated scorer, O.J. Mayo. But then Beasley, the likely number one overall draft pick in this year's NBA 2008 Draft, fell victim to the deft shooting of the Wisconsin Badgers, an underheraled No.3 seed. This division, however, still belongs to the Kansas Jayhawks who finished the regular season at an extremely respectable 33-3.

The Jayhawks were a betting man's best friend going 14-7-1 ATS while at home. That solid home record was due, in large part, to their tenth ranked offense which rocked the rim for 81.4 points per game. But it's their defense, which stymies opponents to 61.4 points per game, which earned them the top seed in the Midwest bracket. Kansas is a scary team right now because they have been cruising through their competition lately. They handedly won the Big 12 tournament with a penultimate victory over Texas. If you're looking for a team that has all the momentum right now, Kansas is your best bet.

The headlines, however, have been stolen by No.10 Davidson and their speedy guard Stephen Curry. As uninspiring as their 28-6 regular season record was, Davidson was still 22-10 ATS on the season and have gone 5-1 ATS in their past 6 games. If you're looking for a candid Cinderella team, then Davidson is for you. These Wildcats earned the title by dispatching the perennial Cinderella team, Gonzaga, in a thrilling 82-76 point victory. And when nobody took them seriously, they outlasted the Hoyas in the second-round in a nail biting 74-70 conquest which has them pegged as the Davidson Darlings.

Another magical team was No.13 Siena, which saw their magnificent win over Vanderbilt in the opener fall to the wayside as No.12 Villanova handedly knocked them out of contention. It's not that we take them seriously, but it's hard for any betting man to take Villanova seriously when they've only had to walk through an overrated Clemson team and a lucky Siena squad. And nobody is give Villanova their due credit with losses to Georgetown, Marquette and Louisville on the board during the regular season.

Nobody should take Wisconsin lightly. They cake walked through the Big Ten like it was child's play, and now must face those surging Davidson Darlings this weekend as four-point favorites. But Wisconsin is only 19-13 ATS on the season, and averaged a dismal 67.6 points per game offensively. Their defense is the best in the nation with only 53.9 points per game, meaning that the UNDER is a favorite for the Badgers betting faithful.

But Stephen Curry, son of NBA player Dell Curry, has shown that he is quite possibly the fastest player in college basketball. He's literally impossible to cover and always makes open looks for himself. With 25.7 points per game and 2.9 assists per game, the 6-foot-3 guard has shown his penchant for taking over games. And with a game on the line, there is nobody you want at the line more than Curry, who is certainly making a name for himself in the craziness that is March Madness.

The betting community is getting behind Davidson, but this is still Kansas's bracket to lose. Kansas is about as unsexy as you get, but that just means they don't get headlines. Getting wins and covering the spread, however, is all we care about here at BetUS.com. That is what Kansas does in spades and unless Davidson can magically overcome the titanic scoring force of Kansas, or the dominant defensive play of the riley Badgers, then the smart better should be on the Jayhawks' side.
