Fed's Woes Continue

Tennis Superstar Roger Federer

After more than a decade of dominance at the top of the men's game, there are genuine fears that time is catching up with Roger Federer.

The eminently likeable Swiss has endured a tough few months, with many suggesting his skills are on the wane.

Back at Wimbledon in June he suffered his worst Grand Slam defeat since 2004 in the second round against Sergiy Stakhovsky. It was a result that saw him drop out of the world's top 4 for first time since July 2003, exactly 10 years after he won his first Wimbledon title.

In an attempt to gain more points and climb back up the rankings Federer has entered smaller tour tournaments for the first time years.

That included the Swiss Open in Gstaad, where he had not played for a decade. But his experience proved to be another painful one, losing 6-3 6-4 to Daniel Brands in the second round.

He also lost to Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis in the semi-finals in Germany earlier this month and has won just one title, in Halle, so far this season.

Now, it pays to remember that people were writing him off last year before he came storming back to win the Wimbledon title. And though he has a calm and charming exterior, Federer is one of the most determined sportsmen you will ever come across and he will do everything to climb back up the rankings.

But as the game becomes quicker and ever more reliant on fitness, he must realise that no-one can fight the affects of time.

His reputation as one of the game's greats is secured so you wonder how long he will continue to play if he can no longer reach is impeccably high standards, instead choosing to watch as the next generation try to emulate his achievements.
