There are five stages of play in Texas Holdem. The first is called the pre-flop. Each player is dealt two cards face down, and these cards are called the pocket pair or hole cards. A round of betting follows the pre-flop, and generally few players fold (give up) at this stage. The next step in Texas Holdem is the flop. When the first round of betting is finished, the dealer lays three cards face-up in the center of the table. These cards are appropriately deemed "the flop."
