Texas Holdem vs Omaha: Which is Better

Undoubtedly, No Limit Texas Holdem is the most popular form of poker in North America, possibly the world. But the second most popular is probably Pot Limit Omaha, an increasingly common game found in pretty much every poker room whether it's online or brick and mortar.

The two games are extremely similar in that they are both forms of Holdem and use five community cards: the three-card flop, the turn and the river. Also, in both games players try to make the best five-card-hand by selecting the best cards from the board (community cards) and their hand.

There are two main points that differentiate Texas Holdem from Omaha:

1.) The player is dealt two cards in Texas Holdem and four cards in Omaha.

2.) In both games the players combine cards from their hand with the community cards but in Texas Holdem the player may choose to use both, one or none of their own cards to make their 5-card hand. In Omaha the player must use two cards from the four that they were dealt.

So although the games at their core are both poker and both forms of Holdem and therefore strikingly similar, the differences in game play results in Omaha tending to require a much better hand to win a pot and having many more drawing options.

This is an important distinction because it results in Omaha hands having a few issues that might trip up a player used to Texas Holdem. Here are a couple examples:

* Texas Holdem players become used to the fact that they can draw to a flush with only one card of the relevant suit. Since you need to use at least two of your hole cards in Omaha you could have a board showing four hearts and have a heart in your hand but still not have a flush.

* Texas Holdem players will also be used to having a full house when the board shows two pairs and they have a single card that matches one of the pairs. Again, the fact that two hole cards must be used in Omaha would prevent this from working.

So with Texas Holdem being the most popular poker game in the world and Omaha being the second most, you see a great deal of players learn poker by playing Texas Holdem and then moving on to Omaha to try something different. This has helped to create a "generation" of Omaha players who tend to overvalue their hands since they are not used to having four cards to choose from and will, for example, see value in calling two pair with an all-in push..

But is one game better than another? Well, that is for you to say, but if you're looking for a game that sees big hands more often and has a lot of players (at the lower limits at least) who overvalue their hands, then Omaha is probably a pretty good bet.
