Peter-Toney: Random Thoughts

By Carlos Guzman

We are just a few days away from what should be an explosive confrontation Saturday between James "Lights Out" Toney and the "Nigerian Nightmare" Samuel Peter. Here are a few thoughts and predictions I received from commentators, trainers, writers and fighters:

Al Bernstein: "This fight is pretty important to Sam Peter. Another loss to a marquee heavyweight sets him back. And you can only be thought of as a diamond in the rough, a fighter with potential for so long"

Jim Gray: "Neither of these guys are fighting to protect their past, they're fighting for their futures."

Steve Farhood: "In 77 career fights James Toney has never been stopped, but Sam Peter is the hardest single puncher in the heavyweight division. But can Sam Peter adjust his style to land his punches against a defensive genius? If Sam Peter falls into the same trap as previous James Toney opponents -- Toney wins this fight.

Michael Lamkin: "Samuel Peter will be very dangerous early in the fight, but Toney's ring savvy should work well enough to keep him out of harm's way. From the middle rounds on, it will be all Toney: slipping, ducking, dodging and counter-punching. Peter will be made to look like an amateur. Barring a wild KO punch from Peter, Toney should win a clear unanimous decision."

Freddy Roach: "[Toney] overwhelms people with that middleweight speed. He kills the heavyweight. He told me he'd knock Holyfield out. I said nobody knocks Holyfield out -- this is a 12-round fight. He knocked him out. So when James tells me something, I believe him"

So what does James Toney plan for Samuel Peter? "I'm knocking out Samuel Peter out," said a confident Toney. "I don't care how big he is, I'm knocking him out. I'm going to brutalize him like I did Holyfield."

Samuel Peter, the sportsbook favorite, sent his comments to the media: "This is the biggest, most important fight of my life. I will destroy Toney. I have no fear and am ready for anything he has to offer, and that includes his tricks, style and maneuvers. He is going to see things from me that the world has never seen before.

"Toney knows he made a silly mistake by agreeing to fight me. I am going to hit him everywhere. I promise you I will win by knockout."

Make sure you tune into Showtime on Saturday at at 10 p.m. ET. It's going to be WWIII.

Luck Of The Irish
On Sept. 29, "Irish" John Duddy takes on former world champion Luis "Yori Boy" Campas for the IBA world middleweight title in what should prove to be a slug-out.

Neither man is considered a defensive wizard; they'll take two punches to give one. Footwork is questionable for both men, but I'll give Duddy the edge here based on youth. Both men are big punchers, but Campas is fighting at middleweight simply because he's old and it's easier to make weight. This fight will fill the Garden, but only to see the expected -- Campas take a beating.

How can I say that? Campas has only lost to the best, you say. That's true, but his career was basically over in 2000 when he quit against Oba Carr. Although Campas' KO record is very impressive, he's not afraid to lose, either. He quit on his stool against Carr and Fernando Vargas. He got the stuffing beat out of him by Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and recently by Daniel Santos. For Campas, I won't be surprised if he retires immediately after this bout.

Duddy left this past Sunday to training camp in the Poconos. This was the funniest thing he told me: "Campas shook my hand and looked over to his trainer and said, 'Who is this guy?' Campas' trainer replied 'that's John Duddy.' Campas said, 'Oh, he doesn't look like a fighter,' and [I] just smiled."

Recently Announced Bouts
Wladimir Klitschko vs. Calvin Brock, Nov. 11: Brock replaces Shannon Briggs as an opponent. Calvin is a good guy, but that's all I can say about him. This fight ends with a Klitschko KO and the Eastern European connection continues to keep the titles hostage.

Antonio "Tono" Margarito vs. Joshua Clottey: Joshua didn't look too impressive in his last outing against Roberto Duran protege Richard Gutierrez -- but it's a good test for Margarito. If Clottey would use his jab, this bout would be much closer. Clottey comes on strong early but then gets dominated for about eight rounds. Bet Margarito.

Jermain Taylor vs Kassim Ouma: Ouma is coming off of an impressive victory over Sechew "Iron Horse" Powell, while Taylor is still licking his wounds from his war with Winky Wright. What makes this bout a hard fight to pick is that it's Ouma's first appearance as a middleweight. He's an unproven commodity. At junior middleweight, the "human punching machine" would easily outpoint Jermain. But at middleweight can Ouma sustain the record-shattering 120 punches per round we normally see? I want to speak to Ouma and learn about his gameplan before I bet any money on either guy. After all, Taylor is still trying to absorb what his new trainer, Emanuel Steward, is teaching him. It showed against Winky because he kept his hands very low, and Winky made him pay for that bad habit. I actually favor Ouma in this one, but it's homework time.
