But Kansas and the Heartland Park track weren't very kind and the team left with less than they expected. Unusually hot weather greeted and affected all the teams. Data from previous Topeka races became less valid as the temperature crept upwards. Smooth runs were hard to come by, so just making the field, let alone improving, was a real challenge. The ParkerTech crew managed a final round set-up that Townsend was able to finesse into the 15 th spot. Although that 5.881 run, at 246.35 mph, got them into the field, there was no time to try improvements. Even though Townsend's time actually improved, to a 5.878, it wasn't enough to upset Chesterman. Frank Parker, after loading the car, said "It was a tough weekend for all the teams. Had it been just our car having problems, I would have been upset." He then added, "But my crew is persistent... and good! They used the data we had and put together one of the only two cars whose race times were better than qualifying. We were going in the right direction, but had to face a car that didn't slow up as much as the others." The ParkerTech crew, Frank and Dan Parker, Brad and Jeff Eldred, Tom and Nancy McVey, Tom Krebaum and Tony Gulley, are already working on strategy for their next race, The CarQuest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, in Joliet , Illinois , June 9-11.
