Triple Crown Betting Odds

Triple Crown betting is imprecise at best and at worst, a shot in the dark. However, if you can some how make your bets pay off, Triple Crown betting can be an exciting addition to your sports gambling repertoire. The trick to Triple Crown betting is to hedge your bets, know your horses, and expect the unexpected. Actually, there are 4 Triple Crowns in American Sports. Three of these four involve horse racing of some sort: horse racing, harness racing; trotting, harness racing; pacing, and the baseball Triple Crown which refers to winning a league's batting, home run, and RBI championship for a single season. However, when most people think of the Triple Crown, they are thinking of the horse racing standard that consists of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes.

The odds against winning at all three of these races are absolutely incredible. In the history of the Triple Crown there have only been 11 horses that have managed to pull off the feat. One of the horses, Secretariat (who won in 1973) was actually named one of the century's finest athletes. The last time any horse won the Triple Crown was in 1978 when Affirmed won all three horse races. More recently, the horse Smarty Jones won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness only to lose at the Belmont. Actually, even though just 11 horses have managed to win all three races, 48 have managed to win two of the races.

This is actually where you can make a lot of money on Triple Crown betting, by betting on a horse to win two of the three races, or just to be in the top three. Usually, these will be the first two because the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness are both shorter courses which favor sprinters, like Smarty Jones, while the Belmont is a longer course that favors horses that may be a touch slower, but can go for longer. You can do this by betting on a horse to place (get 1st or 2nd) or to show (get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd). For example, if you had bet on Smarty Jones to place in the Triple Crown, you would have come out ahead, as he got 1st place in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and 2nd place in the Belmont. In other words, although a Triple Crown winner is a rare event, it is relatively common for one horse to place or show in all three races.

There has been talk lately of redesigning the Triple Crown so that there are more winners. So far, there is no action, it is still all talk, but many owners and other interested parties feel that the race should evolve along with the breeding of America's thoroughbreds. When and if those changes are implemented, there might be a change in general Triple Crown betting strategy. Until then, there are tried and true methods to make money Triple Crown betting.
