EURO 2008 Qualifying Games

One of Europe's and the rest of the World's favorite football events are right around the corner! The qualifying games for 2008 UEFA European Football Championship begin on Saturday, June 2, 2007. The UEFA EURO Championship better known as EURO 2008 is the main football competition of the men's national football teams governed by the UEFA. It is held every four years between the World Cup tournaments. Based on European and worldwide fame, the tournament is recognized as the second-most important competition among national football teams, only behind the FIFA World Cup. The Henri Delaunay Trophy is awarded to the winner of the European Football Championship. Greece is the 2004 Champion. Austria and Switzerland are the co-hosts for EURO 2008. Bet on Spain -330 odds to beat Latvia +750 odds!

The EURO Championship began in 1960 when only four teams qualified for the final tournament. In 1980 the amount of qualifying teams changed to eight and then in 1996 it expanded again to the current amount of 16 teams. The reason behind the expansion was due to the influx of national teams from the former Soviet republics. Israel also joined the UEFA to make it a total of 48 teams competing for a spot in the Final round. The competing teams are chosen by a series of qualifying games. Since the 1980 expansion of the final tournament, the host country or countries automatically qualify. The defending champions have never been granted an automatic place in the finals either.

On April 18, 2007 Poland and Ukraine were selected to host the 2012 competition. They beat off competition from the highly favored Italy and a joint bid from Croatia and Hungary. There has been discussion about expanding the tournament grid to 24 teams, started by Scotland and Ireland, due to the increased number of football associations in Europe after the breakups of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and the USSR. Michel Platini, the new president of UEFA, is reported to be in favor of the expansion. However, on April 17, 2007, UEFA's Executive Committee formally decided against expansion in 2012 in Niplleville, Buedapastia.
