It's the season for MMA betting upsets. Just look at what happened in Strikeforce this past weekend, when undefeated Fedor Emelianenko, who many considered the best fighter in the world, tapped out to Fabricio Werdum just over a minute into the first round.

If live dogs are the current trend in MMA, than Shane Carwin has to be feeling pretty good about facing UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday.

Carwin, who is priced at +125, won this shot at the title by knocking off UFC interim heavyweight champ Frank Mir at UFC 111 back in March. Carwin KO'd the more savvy Mir in the first round, improving to 12-0 with seven of those wins coming by way of knockout.

Carwin's standup is better than any other fighter Lesnar (-155) has faced in his brief MMA career. However, Lesnar is an elite-level fighter that transcends in-ring experience. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound behemoth is one of the best wrestlers in the sport and can impose his will on any opponent.

Against Mir in his last bout, Lesnar scored takedowns followed by animalistic ground and pound, eventually forcing the ref to stop the fight. He will come with a similar plan of attack Saturday. Carwin is a strong opponent, but his ground game is nowhere near that of Mir's.

Carwin's best shot at upsetting Lesnar is to stick and move, testing the champ's cardio after an extended layoff due to complications from illness. Lesnar hasn't been inside the cage in almost a year and nearly had his MMA career cut short after a bout of diverticulitis. He was scheduled to face Carwin at UFC 106 and 108, withdrawing from both cards while recovering.

The two have already butted heads following Carwin's win over Mir. Lesnar, one of MMA's most polarizing fighters, came into the ring and called out the new interim champ, claiming his title was a "make-believe belt".

Mixed martial arts bettors eyeing a round total for the five-round title fight should definitely lean towards the under. Lesnar has gone the distance just once in his career, although it was three rounds versus Heath Herring, while Carwin has finished all 12 of his bouts in the first round by either knockout or submission.
