Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson

Light-Heavyweight Quinton Jackson

UFC 96 Betting Preview

For the third year in a row, the UFC is landing in Columbus for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival and the UFC 96 betting odds have been posted by BetUS Sportsbook. Considering the state that California is in right now, we're not sure if the man himself will be making it to the festival and it looks like the UFC betting has also been stingy with the big names this time around. Still, that doesn't mean there aren't some great matches on this card, so let's take a look:

Quinton Jackson (-350) continues his quest for another shot at the belt he lost over New Years Eve with a fight against Keith Jardine (+250). Jackson knocked Wanderlei Silva's head off in his last bout and is going into this fight knowing that a win earns him the #1 contender spot. Keith Jardine is in a bit of a different spot ... with team mate Rashad Evans currently holding the belt, he's not aiming for anything other than another high point on his lengthening resume of upsets.

The key questions in this fight are if Jardine will try and fight for a decision and if that will work on Jackson. Jackson lost his belt in a five round decision to Forrest Griffin, mainly off the strength of Forrest's leg kick heavy strategy. Jardine has already used a similar gameplan to defeat Chuck Liddell. Will Quinton Jackson come out aggressive enough to avoid a similar fate?

In the co-main event, up and comer Shane Carwin (+145) attempts to prove that he's the real deal against the established Gabriel Gonzaga (-185). Carwin is 10-0 with all of his fights ending in the first round ... many within the first 2 minutes. Gonzaga has had a bit of a bumpy ride in the UFC but you can't ignore his KO of Mirko Crocop and domination over his last two opponents.

This fight hinges around the many question marks surrounding Carwin and Gonzaga. Can Carwin polish off experienced opponents or is he just another fairground champion? How will his NCAA wrestling pedigree fare against Gabriel Gonzaga's fierce jiu jitsu skills? And will Gabriel Gonzaga crack if Carwin pressures him? His last two losses in the UFC were both against men who managed to break his spirit. Can Carwin achieve this?

Matt Hamill (-170) will be taking on WEC import Mark Munoz (+140) in a battle of the wrestlers who love to strike. Both fighters have wrestling credentials up the wazoo and both are still relatively new to the fight game, with Munoz debuting in 2007 and Hamill in 2006. Munoz is taking a big step up coming to the UFC, and Hamill will not be an easy opponent. He's only looked bad in one fight against former middleweight champ Rich Franklin where Hamill refused to give up on the feet despite getting trounced. Munoz's biggest fight was against someone named Chuck Grigsby, so that tells you something about the experience disparity. If Hamill fights smart, Munoz will be in trouble.

Next up is Ohio native and TUF dip chewer Matt Brown (+110) vs TUF 4 contestant Pete Sell (-140). Matt Brown has an 8-7 record (including 2-1 in the octagon) while Sell is 8-4 with three of those losses coming in his last 4 fights. Both fighters are hanging onto their jobs by the skin of their teeth and it should make for an interesting fight to see who wants to stick around more.

Those two aren't the only ones fighting for their jobs. Once considered the next big heavyweight, Brandon Vera (-550) has become just another light heavyweight struggling near the bottom of the card against relative unknown Michael Patt (+400). Considering he makes 100k+ per fight, this is probably the last stop for Vera if he loses. Patt is also on the edge, having lost his first and only fight in the UFC thus far to Tim Boetsch.
