UFC 97 in Montreal May Be CancelledPeople have said that Kimbo Slice is the worst thing possible for the world of MMA, but nobody could have predicted that he could somehow be linked to the demise of an actual UFC event. The link extends from an EliteXC event in which Slice faced MMA journeyman James Thompson, scoring a controversial knockout victory. Thompson then went on to headline an MMA event titled Titans Fighting in Montreal on February 6th of this year. The event was intended to be a stand-up, striking only affair, but do to some minor constraints in the Quebec Athletic Commission sanctioning; they were only able to approve "Full MMA" events. The solution by the promoters was to have the fighters internally agree to not take any of the fights to the ground. This was all fine and dandy until Mr. Thompson took the ring for the main event and proceeded to immediately shoot and take down his opponent. The crowd, who had until this point been given what they paid for - an all striking series of bouts - went nuts, showering the cage with beer cans and bottles, causing the fight to be stopped and for the referee and fighters to escape the near riot that was beginning in the auditorium. After this disaster of an event, the Quebec Athletic Commission began re-evaluating their sanctioning rules for combat sports events, and decided that they were not prepared to allow MMA events with elbow and knee strikes - a pretty significant part of UFC bouts. They also wanted to shrink the size of the cage, and add a requirement for referees to stop a bout if a fighter is knocked down to make sure he is ok. All of this adds up to the possibility of the UFC 97 event, scheduled to be held on April 18, to be cancelled unless the UFC wants to change its rules, or the QAC wants to forget about theirs. All in all, the last time the UFC came to Montreal it was considered the most successful UFC event ever, and cancelling this event would certainly be catastrophic to the future of MMA in Canada. BetUS faithful shouldn't fear as all bets are still on and this will more than likely blow over as there are too many variables in the equation (cash money) for this to be canceled.
