Friday, June 30th - Quarter-Final Match-ups - Germany and Italy Advance
Friday, June 30th was the first day of the quarter-final matches. Germany squared off with Argentina for the first match of the day. It was a close and tense game which ended in a 1-1 tie by the end of regulation. Germany ultimately defeated Argentina in a 4-2 penalty shoot-out. German goalie Jens Lehmann made two great penalty saves, helping Germany advance. Germany is heading to the semi-finals for a great match-up against Italy. The second match was between Italy and Ukraine. Italy came out firing with a sixth minute strike from Gianluca Zambrotta. They added two more for a 3-0 final score. Ukraine did however play a very good match. They had some really great and close attempts by Andriy Gusin, Oleg Gusev and Maksym Kalinichenko, but no deliveries. Italy now faces a bigger task on-hand, Germany in the semi-finals. This will be a great home-team match-up. Check out the
