Bremen Faces a Tough Challenge

It's nothing uncommon for Werder Bremen to be playing mid-week nowadays. But its opposition on Tuesday does not stack up to its usual Champions League counterpart.

Still, Bremen's showdown at Nurnberg is no less important at the moment.

Thomas Schaff's club has made waves in the Champions League as it pulled ahead of title-holder Barcelona in Group A with seven points compared to five for the Spaniards. And the duo appeared headed for a fight for second place as Chelsea has collected 10 points from four matches.

Bremen knows it has a home match against Chelsea and then heads to Barcelona for most likely the decider.

But, the Chelsea game isn't until Nov. 22, and the German leaders don't head to Camp Nou until Dec. 5.

In the meantime, Werder needs to get its act back in gear. Bremen needed an Ivan Klasnic header to manage a 1-1 draw at home against promoted Energie Cottbus. And Schaff's troops saw VfB Stuttgart pull to within two points of them in the Bundesliga standings.

Luckily, Bayern Munich drew with Schalke 04 as both sit three points back -- on 17 points -- going into the mid-week action.

Nurnberg has lost just once in 10 games this season and will likely pack its defense against the high-octane Werder offense, which has produced a Bundesliga-best 28 goals. Hans Meyer's team, meanwhile, has allowed a league-low nine goals this season.

Bremen could struggle with a flu bug going around the club, and Tim Borowski, Patrick Owomoyela, Daniel Jensen and Mohamed Zidan all are expected to miss the road game.

Regardless, Werder Bremen is a -120 WagerWeb.com favorite (with +225 odds for a draw and +260 for a Nurnberg win).

Bremen's top hunters are all due to face weakened sides.

Stuttgart is a -125 home favorite as it welcomes Hamburg, a team in shambles in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League. Bayern Munich (-500) is expected to dismantle last-place Hannover 96 at home.

Schalke 04, meanwhile, faces the toughest test against the top four as it travels to Borussia Moenchengladbach as only a slight favorite (+140 for a Schalke win, +150 for a Gladbach victory).

Gladbach may sit in 14th place, but its 12 points in five home matches -- zero points on the road -- is tied for second-best in the league.
